When Fear Dominates Your Life

Fear, terror, dread, phobia, anxiety, panic, whatever you want to call it

. That pounding heartbeat, paper-dry mouth, trembling hands and that numb cloud of impending doom descending onto you. Don't let King Fear be a tyrant in your life any longer.

A number of conditions that send people looking for help from a hypnotherapist are all related to fear. Too many people these days are dominated by fear, and hypnosis offers the promise of release from this way of life.

Here, we're not talking about normal healthy fear. Normal healthy fear, which we'll the self-preservation instinct is there to help keep you alive. If you don't have this sort of fear, you are likely to end up badly injured, broke, dead or all three. This self-preservation instinct is what stops us taking a run down the middle of a busy motorway, dancing on window ledges nine storeys above the street, sticking fingers into live light sockets or telling the boss what you really think about his hideous ties, obvious toupee and ridiculous management policies. If the idea of doing any of these things makes you shudder, you're normal and you don't need help from hypnotherapy or anything else.

Fear has physical symptoms and it is normal and natural to feel these symptoms during times of crisis or danger. Again, this is normal. The physical sensations come from adrenaline circulating through your system, gearing the body up for intense action in response to the situation. In fact, it is getting you ready to be brave. This is what we call courage: feeling afraid but doing the right thing in spite of it. Courage has been held as a virtue by nearly all societies in all times during history - after all, the world has and will be a dangerous place to live in. We all admire courage, but it would be a mistake to think that courage means that you know no fear. The popular writer C.S. Lewis once stated that a person who has a phobia about cats (we see people with similar fears coming for treatment through hypnosis) but picks up a cat for some good reason has greater courage than the person who rescues dozens of people from a burning building or something of that kind but feels no fear.

The trouble with fear is when it comes and troubles you when there is no danger or when the sensations paralyze you. This isn't a phenomenon unique to humans. Everyone who rides horses knows that some horses tend to shy away from harmless objects and noises, believing them to be dangerous predators. And anyone out for a drive in the country has seen the paralyzing fear of a small animal in the middle of the road with the headlights in their eyes. With animals, it's sheer instinct taking over - and it's probably the same with humans.

The first way that fear can dominate people is through phobias. Phobias are one of the most common reasons why people seek help from hypnotherapy. A phobia can be defined as a morbid or excessive fear of... well, anything. Common fears include enclosed spaces, heights, different types of animals and water. Again, these go beyond normal fears. A person with a healthy sense of self-preservation stays away from a Rottweiler with its teeth bared and its hackles up. A person with a phobia of dogs is terrified of a small, friendly puppy that jumps up wanting to play. A person with a healthy sense of self-preservation will think twice about diving into a river in full flood - although he or she may do this attempting to save a child from drowning - but a person with aquaphobia (a phobia about water) gets panicky about getting into the bath.

Phobias often overlap with panic attack problems - panic attacks often are experienced by phobia sufferers in response to their trigger stimulus (heights, dogs, water, etc.). However, panic attacks can happen all on their own without links to phobias. Many people come to find help through hypnosis after experiencing panic attacks in common, everyday situations - some of which they are able to handle perfectly well at other times. During a panic attack, the physical sensations of fear take over, along with a growing sense of doom or dread. You probably feel like that rabbit in the headlights of an oncoming road train - and have the added human dimension of impending doom.

Often, panic attacks are linked with problems with anxiety. You could say that anxiety triggers panic attacks from the other end of the spectrum. Someone suffering from anxiety is often described as a chronic worrier - they get up tight and nervous about all sorts of small, everyday things. Instead of experiencing panic as a response to a specific trigger, those who suffer from anxiety disorder are more "general" in what they worry about or are afraid of. And eventually, all these little nagging worries boil up and over into panic attacks.

One reassuring thing to remember if you experience any of these three problems that are commonly treated via hypnotherapy: you are not crazy. You are just dominated by fear.

The things that all these situations have in common is that they ultimately spring from beliefs held deep inside us - the place that many people call the spirit or soul. You can try telling a person in the grip of fear that they are safe and have no need to worry. Admittedly, this sort of positive talk can help a bit. You can even try positive self-talk if you are approaching a situation that is likely to trigger a panic attack. But it only helps a bit. Their mind and ears might hear you and agree with you, but their souls and spirits don't hear and don't agree - the soul and spirit are still afraid. To be free from the tyrrany of King Fear, you need to change at this deep level of the psyche. As the Bible once put it, you need to "be transformed by the renewing of your mind." You need to change the beliefs held by the spirit, which is what hypnosis aims to do.
