When Planning To Join A Book Club - The Important Considerations

. Book club members may be surprised when they hear about this, but the origin of these groups can be traced back to as far as the early 1720s. Yes, our forefathers spent most of their leisurely time reading different kinds of books to entertain and educate themselves.

Although men were the first to popularize a reading group, it was the women who followed the examples of their male counterparts. Then, women would initially resort to book clubs as a way of socializing and discussing events in their everyday lives. One person even once said that women simply came together to talk about issues that were important to them. Women did not only use these clubs as a means of socializing, but also as a way to have their voices heard by their peers.

Reading clubs then are definitely not just for bookworms. There are actually a number of reasons why you should belong to a club such as the Literary Guild or the Doubleday book club. When you are a member of a book club, you can have many lifelong benefits than what most people think.

Here are some points to ponder on as one considers joining a reading club:

Being a member of a book club expands your ideas. Joining a reading group helps you gain ideas from your fellow members through in-depth discussions and assimilation of different viewpoints.

Clubs can give you a chance to explore other book genres. When reading a book, most people only focus on their favorite genre and do not try to explore others. But when joining a club, you will be encouraged by other members to read other genre and most probably you will not be able to resist the temptation of experimenting with your interests.

Retention of information is better when members are able to discuss books with other people. And the usual setting of a book club, which is far from a formal classroom structure, relaxes members' minds and allows them to enjoy their discussions more.

This is also a great way to know and appreciate other cultures. Socializing with other members who simply enjoy reading books or novels will be a very enriching experience. Discussing differences in background and culture also helps everyone in the club to understand themselves by placing them within a larger context.

These can also serve as social forums and provide great opportunities for individuals to meet and befriend new people.

Start in a group of people who find books to be interesting can influence a non-book lover to start appreciating books himself. Indeed, developing a love for books is going to be one of the best things that parents can do for the enrichment of their children's lives.
