When You Need Prayer

Do you find it difficult to tell others when you need prayer

? Perhaps your need is too personal to be broadcast in the church bulletin or announced aloud? Many people who ask for prayer often leave their specific need unmentioned. After all, God knows and that is all that is truly important.

Don't deprive yourself of having others pray for you because of embarrassment. If your need is truly personal, others will understand and you can simply make your request known, yet state that your request is personal. If it isn't something you particularly want to keep under wraps, let others know you are seeking prayers and take comfort in knowing that your brothers and sisters in Christ are praying for you.

Often, the prayer requests we hear at church are for truly tragic situations, such as illness, injury, or other devastating events that occur. However, you don't have to wait for disaster to strike to ask others to pray with and for you. The Bible clearly tells us to pray for one another and to bear one another's burdens. Asking others to pray for you helps them to fulfill that request and it can provide strength and comfort to you as well.

Asking others to pray with us instead of just asking them to pray for us is a bit harder for some. Asking others to pray with us invites a certain vulnerability that is difficult for some of us. Even as Christians, many of us want to give off the perception that all is well and that we have it all together. However, praying with others can help to forge intimate bonds that will strengthen all parties.

Wonderful things can occur when we pray with others. A closeness often develops among those who pray together. Going to God in prayer with those closest to you has a way of strengthening bonds. Praying for each other helps us to get outside of ourselves and look at the issues those around us are facing. It is also a comfort to hear others pray for us because it makes us feel cared for.

The next time you are facing a struggle or a situation, even if it is not life shattering, consider asking others to pray with you and for you. Offer to do the same for them. When you do this, life changes will occur, changes that will draw you nearer to God and nearer to those who love Him.
