Hey Independent singletons. Welcome to the at10pm community. With great power comes great responsibility, with dating comes an unwritten code of behavior, knows as the Dating Etiquette. Internet has revolutionized quite a bit in the last decade. And so did the new etiquette for online dating but just because you are sitting behind a computer, doesnt mean that etiquettes should be abandoned. They still apply online so in order to succeed, here are some basic principles that must still be adhered to.
What not to say in a first message:
I cant tell you how many times I have seen guys (and it's always guys) type in the so not original wanna chat first message - just those two words, nothing else. Well, it doesnt take too much of thinking to come with a no. Coz frankly, if wanna chat is the best you can come up with in an attempt to stand out from the competition then you're going to get nowhere fast.
The first messages, the first contact should standout and catch their attention. Refrain yourself from Hey Beautiful/ you look nice/ beautiful picture/ lets chat. Put your head together and think of a message that wont end up in: Ok/ Thanks.
Something like Hey, I took the time to read your profile, we seem to have things in common and Id like to know more about you. (For instance)
How to say thanks, but no thanks
If you were approached in a bar by someone you werent that interested in you wouldnt just ignore them, would you? Normal thing is to think of a polite way to let them down, for example sorry, Im not looking for a relationship or I am with someone sort of thing. Unfortunately, if you are online, you are single. So breaking it off to someone is rather more difficult.
So if someone contacts you and they aren't your type or dont stick your boxes, dont just ignore them. Respond to them, however, in a way that you would like to be responded to. Simply be polite and let them down gently by saying sorry, youre out of my age range or Im looking for someone who lives a little closer and then wish them well in their continued search.
How to cope if you get the thanks, but no thanks message
If you are on the other side of the road and receive the odd thanks, but no thanks, you do not have to respond to it in a child-like yeah well I didnt fancy you anyway manner. Please, this only make you look silly.
Rejection is never easy, but you are not the only one getting it. At least the person has taken time to respond, there are many who wont even reply to you. So, scrape your ego up off the floor, dust yourself down, and continue in your search. After all, you know how the saying goes, therere plenty more fish...
When should you remove your profile?
Ah, so you've met someone online who youre interested in, things are going well and youre not using the site any more. When is it a good time to delete your profile? Its an early stage, you dont want to play with the fate of removing your profiles or keep your profile on the site all the while ignoring messages that you are receiving. The best thing to do here it is to talk it through with your new partner. As you both met online you will be in the same predicament, so talk it through together and make a joint decision. At10pm allows your do disable your profile, so your profile is on hold or let you delete it and re-activate it should you need it again in the future.
