Where Did The Clothing Hanger Come From?

A clothing hanger might seem like the most simplest of accessories to have in your wardrobe and

, you dont think twice about how you store your clothes in your wardrobe as every home has hundreds of them holding your beloved garments. But when you actually think about where the hanger came from I bet many people cant name who discovered them of where they originated from. Imagine walking into a clothing store to look through clothes which were piled up instead of being hung up neatly on rails so you wouldnt be able to look through them quickly and in an orderly manner, the thought is almost imaginable and its a thought which probably doesnt cross a lot of peoples minds.

Some historians have different names about the invention of the hanger; some say it was Thomas Jefferson while others say it was Albert Parkhouse or Christopher Cann. Either way the hanger was developed in the 1800s and designed to hang your items of clothing such as; dresses, jackets, coats, shirts blouses or tops to prevent them from getting creased and crinkled when they are put away to be worn.

There is a variation of hangers but the most common one is the iron hanger. It is a known fact that Albert Parkhouse developed the iron coat hanger in 1903. He did this by bending a piece of wire into two ovals with the ends twisted together to form a hook, he then took some more wire and twisted it round so that it fit into the insides of the shoulders of his coat so he could hang it up wherever he desired.

Each one can come in a variation of woods, metals or padded out in materials such as silk which are designed for hanging extravagant garments made out of delicate material or for hanging up nice underwear. Every home needs clothing hangers as they are must-have essential in your wardrobe and cupboards and it would be rather strange not to own them. They are also vital essentials for fashion stores around the world; just imagine how many stores need coat hangers?

In a coat hanger study by Kristin Underwood from Treehugger in 2008 it was discovered then 8 billion hangers were sold each year and she said the only way to imagine how many hangers that would be is to Picture the Empire State Building packed floor to ceiling and from basement to observation deck - all 102 floors - with plastic hangers. Now multiply that by 4.6 to get the number of skyscrapers needed to hold 8 billion hangers.
