Where Is Your Easter Bunny?
While most of us might not be overtly familair with the concept of a Good Friday
(April 6) we are more than happy to celebrate the religious day off from work.
So what is Good Friday?
Its a day when Christians all over the world commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Many people spend the day in fasting, praying, and meditation.
And where does an Easter bunny fit in this?
On Sunday, after Good Friday, which is called the Easter Sunday, is when people celebrate the resurrection of Christ. It so happens that after three days on the cross, when Jesus was rested in his tomb, he rose from it.
Sunday is when the churches are full for service. Its also a day when Easter eggs have to be cracked, symbolic by its hard shell as a tomb from where the 'resurrection' emerges.
In the old days, when people fasted during Lent (a time when meat, dairy products were phohibited) hard-boiled eggs were dyed red to represent the blood of Christ and blessed by the priest and distributed.
Over years, the tradition has re-fashioned into chocolate eggs, breads, and even an Easter Bunny.
Bunny, or hare, never lay eggs. How are the two connected? Children were sent out on a treasure hunt of easter eggs hidden by bunnies.
Now you have chocolatiers selling chocolate bunnies alongside easter egg baskets and other Easter confectionery.
