Where Mba Students Get Internships
Students in MBA programs of colleges and universities throughout the United States
can benefit greatly from internship opportunities in government, industry and non-profit organizations. The work experience that students get and the professional contacts they make through internships are valuable assets that can enable the students to obtain good jobs upon graduation.
The United States Department of Labor (DOL) has an MBA Internship Program that seeks to bring in students who want to work with the Federal government when they get their MBA degree. This program allows MBA students to apply what they have learned in classes to a real-world work situation. In addition, the program gives hiring managers in the DOL an opportunity to evaluate the student interns with the goal of determining if they might be suitable for future full-time employment. With the DOL, students have the option of a volunteer internship, an internship that allows them to earn academic credits, or a paid internship.
The Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) in Palo Alto, California, partners with government agencies and Fortune 500 companies to furnish research and development services, technology and intellectual property. Technology companies, for example, may use the Palo Alto Research Center to broaden and deepen their own research expertise. MBA students who are in a two-year program and have a keen interest in technology entrepreneurship and technology research are encouraged to apply. The internships at PARC are all paid positions, and last for about 12 weeks during the summer. MBA interns will have the opportunity to work very closely with business development executives and research teams as a project goes through the various stages of the technology pipeline.
The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc., a company that offers insurance and financial planning advice to individuals and businesses, is another organization that takes on MBA students as interns. The Hartford locates prospective MBA interns through campus interviews followed by interviews at the corporate headquarters in Connecticut. Internships usually take place between the first and second year of a full-time MBA program. Candidates must have four to six years of experience in the work force, and they must show strong leadership ability and be able to think critically. MBA students who obtain this internship will have an opportunity to see the insurance and financial services industries from the inside.
According to an article that appeared in February 2012 on the website of "U.S News & World Report," start-up companies are an excellent internship opportunity for MBA students because they offer a chance for the students to work closely with company founders and CEOs. The students in these internships frequently have roles that allow them to exert an influence on the future direction of the company. RideCharge, for example, is a start-up company that has been around for five years, and has created transportation apps such as Taxi Magic. The company wants an MBA intern for the summer of 2012 who will have an important role in expanding operations in Europe and Latin America.
