Where's Political Courage and Bi-Partisan Cooperation When We Need It?

Letting all of the Bush tax cuts expire might actually be the better idea

. It's a bitter pill to swallow, which could cause a second dip in the economy, but would get us back on a more sustainable footing and create the opportunity to take a fresh look at how to stimulate the economy and job growth without adding so much to future deficits. In the long-runthe entire countrywould benefit as compared to staying on a course everyone concedes is unsustainable. Asking people to make sacrifices is never an easy sell, however, and there is always a political price to pay. The Republicans know there's little risk in using this option as a threat. Doing the responsible thing takes political courage and bi-partisan cooperation, which deflects public reproach. Even less likely than the Bush tax cuts having any more beneficial effects on job growth than before is Democrats having the courage of their convictions and the spirit of bi-partisanship suddenly taking hold among Republicans.
