New Zealand's capital city of Wellington is designed for the enjoyment of people. Situated on the water's edge at the bottom of New Zealand's North Island, Wellington is a picturesque city full of recreational opportunities and plenty of places to just relax and enjoy the scenery. If you're looking for an inexpensive way to spend time in this beautiful city, Wellington parks are easy to find. The city boasts more than 100 parks and play areas which are enjoyed by families and individuals throughout the year. If you're investigating some of the many parks in the city, the waterfront is a great place to start. In fact, Wellington's waterfront is a bit like one very big park itself. Within this gloriously creative and innovative space, you can find several parks and play spaces.

Waitangi Park is New Zealand's largest new park development in an urban setting. As one of the huge range of Wellington parks, it covers 30 per cent of the waterfront and takes in more than six hectares of land. It is ideally situated close to the CBD, with a children's play garden and a popular caf where you can purchase coffee, ice cream, drinks and snacks. The teenagers can make use of the skate park, and you can also hire a set of petanque boules or watch one of the regular activities that are scheduled at the park during the day or into the evening.

Frank Kitts Park is one of the easier Wellington parks to find on the waterfront. Just look for the giant seagull slide. It will keep the children amused and give you a welcome break as you relax in the sun with your picnic lunch or with something delicious that you've chosen from one of the nearby eateries. You can keep on eye on the children as well as enjoying some of the waterfront's most interesting public art, be mesmerised by the movements of the Water Whirler and take in the gorgeous harbour views.

Wellington parks situated away from the popular waterfront area include the play area in the Botanic Garden which has been built around the green slopes of the garden and features some interesting play equipment including a rocktopus, tube slides, swings and a flying fox. Another centrally located park in the city is the Central Park play area which is found on the fringe of the CBD. It also features a flying fox as well as a space ball climbing frame and a spinner bowl. A well thought out junior play area includes crawl tunnels and a climbing net.

As a capital city with the seat of government at its heart, Wellington remains a great place to relax and play and the city's parks are designed for just that.
