The toughest impaired driving laws in Canada have just come into effect this week in BC

. The new law includes a 90 day driving suspension and an automatic $500 find for any individual who refuses to take a breathalyser or someone who blows over a 0.08 blood alcohol level. Additionally, the offender's vehicle will be impounded for 30 days and the offender could face criminal charges. Being charged with impaired driving is a criminal offence in Canada and the charge will appear on all criminal record checks. Anyone convicted of an impaired driving charge will have a criminal record which could affect their ability to travel, employment opportunities and day to day life.

Penalties for impaired driving now began at 0.05 blood alcohol level. The 0.05 blood alcohol level is now the starting point for an impaired driving warning range in BC. Drivers with a blood alcohol level of 0.05 to 0.08 face an immediate 3 day driving suspension and a fine of $200. If an individual is caught twice in 5 years and they blow within the warning level again then they automatically face a seven-day driving suspension, and a $300 fine. Those caught 3 times in 5 years face a 30 day driving suspension and a $400 fine. These new laws are the toughest in Canada and are implemented with the hopes of reducing drunk driving related deaths in BC. According to the new laws, impaired drivers will also be required to complete the Responsible Drivers Program.
