You're not alone. It's hard to tell what's good or bad for you these days since most labels report the scientific names of the ingredients, even the natural ones that are extracted from plants and herbs. For example, coconut oil is listed as cocos nucifera, which many people mistakenly believe is a cocoa derivative. Lactic acid sounds incredibly harmful and dangerous, but it's actually the hydrating component we extract from milk.

While it's impossible to memorize every single ingredient on every single product, there are a few major ones that can be harmful and bad for your skin that you can avoid.

Mineral oil, petrolatum, and isopropyl alcohol are all damaging and harmful to skin with prolonged exposure. These ingredients are commonly found in everything from shampoo to baby lotion, so it's worth a look at the label.

The skin breathes through its pores, expelling toxins and dirt, while absorbing nutrients. These substances block the skins pores, reducing the natural abilities of the pores. Not only does it make it difficult for skin cell regeneration, it also causes a build up of the natural oils the body produces. With nowhere else to go, these oils can pool up beneath the skin surface until they finally erupt as a breakout, cyst or other skin ailment.

Furthermore, mineral oil, petrolatum and isopropyl alcohol are linked to the reduction of naturally forming collagen within the body. Dismantling the ability to produce collagen reduces the skin's suppleness and elasticity, leading to the formation of wrinkles, crow's feet and laugh lines.

The good news is, not all products contain these harmful ingredients, and the names are actually pretty easy to remember. So before you pick up that newly advertised miracle lotion, give it a quick flip to make sure it won't do more harm for your skin than good.
