Who Is Going To Be Held Responsible For Our Own Health Destruction?
For those of us that are overweight a common impulse is to go on a diet of some sort
which is an attempt to reduce calorie intake to the level of calorie usage. This is becoming more difficult given the abnormally low calorie requirements associated with our modern inactive and sedentary lifestyles.
It may account for the ninety-five percent of people who endeavor to attain a healthy body weight by dieting alone that fail to achieve this as exercise deficiency is a major factor as well.
The number of overweight people is reaching epidemic proportions afflicting two thirds of the population in developed countries. It is wrecking human health, raising the incidence of killer diseases like heart disease, cancer and diabetes along with dozens of others threatening global well-being.
Not only are we eating too much we are deprived of the vigorous movement and physical activity our bodies need to remain healthy. After all gaining fat weight is a simple equation and the result of consuming more fuel (calories) that are burned off in activity.
With the modernization of our world food has become more abundant and calorie intake has climbed. At the same time calorie intake has been rising, our activity levels have been declining. Many of us sit for up to 80 percent of the 16 hours we are awake each day and 7 out of 10 people do no intentional exercise. This number is on a near perfect parallel with the number of the population that is overweight.
Just in the last 20 years calorie intake has risen by ten percent from diets rich in fat and sugar. It has been estimated the average person in the US consumes 20 teaspoons of sugar each day, much of it in prepared foods and items like soft drinks.
It is also a sad fact that juvenile obesity has more than doubled in the last 30 years. Overweight children are at risk of the same killer diseases as overweight adults and it is predicted that children being born today have a 20-30 year lessened lifespan. Many will have crippling diseases such as diabetes by the time they are eighteen.
For those that are overweight, achieving a slim healthy body again depends of just two things, adding a proper exercise program into one's life that contains mostly strength training exercise to give the muscles a way of burning up the excess calories. This will raise the metabolic rate (the rate the body burns fuel) and whittle away at the stored fat.
The other important factor is ditching the processed foods. This will get rid of the hidden sugar, the chemicals that increase appetite and the empty nutrient-poor low quality food items. Anything with a food label needs to go as it has a label it has been mucked around with by man.
Replace these nutritional time-bombs with natural whole foods such as a piece of grass- fed beef, an apple, a bunch of spinach, a piece of fish from the sea or free range poultry and eggs. These things don't need food labels and if you stick to them at least 80 percent of the time losing excess weight becomes so much easier.
Metabolically we are hunter gatherers with high activity demands. All we have to do is put back what our bodies need. Our heritage says that exercise is a genetic vital commodity - if we continue to ignore that reality it will be at our peril.
Unless we make these changes in our lifestyle, systematically restore muscular movement to our lives and chuck out the low quality food, the overweight epidemic and the health decline associated with it will continue to mushroom.
