Who Knows How To Iron A Shirt?
Not everyone realises that to iron a shirt properly is quite an art
. This art has been lost to a great extent due firstly to wash and wear fabrics reducing the need to iron and the fact that when you wash in cold water shirts dont get nearly as crumpled. Then again, the style of dress these days is more casual than was usual years ago, with T-shirts replacing the ironable shirt for leisure wear, so ironing is not needed as much. In fact, some lucky people can get away with no ironing at all.
Lifestyle is another reason that shirts are not ironed quite so much as they used to be. When the wife and mother spent all her time in the home, ironing was one of her major chores and everything from handkerchiefs and tea towels to pillowcases and even sheets were ironed. Nowadays the wife goes out to work and has no time or energy to iron any but the basic necessities.
Apart from that, tissues have replaced hankies and polyester added to cotton keeps those sheets looking good without being ironed. And Mum can sit down and put her feet up for a while instead of slaving over the ironing board all evening.
In fact, it is possible that mums dont really know how to iron a shirt properly any more. Most busy mums just grab the shirt and throw it over the ironing board, doing the fronts and back first, then the sleeves and collar. It is far better to start with the back and front of the collar, then do the cuffs, leaving the larger sections to be done last.
And many people simply iron the sleeves of the shirt so that there is a crease down the outside of the arm. Our grandmothers would be horrified! They knew how to iron clothes properly. If you dont have a special sleeve pad on your ironing board, then you should never run the iron down the shoulder side of the sleeve to crease it. Rather, the sleeve should be turned so that the outside edge is ironed flat and there is no crease in it at all.
And of course, the two front pieces of the shirt should be ironed on the inside so that the facing is ironed and the iron does not touch the buttons, which can be spoiled by having a hot iron pressed onto them. It is also much easier to iron the yoke if there is one - on the inside.
