Who Qualifies For Habitat Homes?
With over 100 million homeless people throughout the world
, Habitat for Humanity cannot provide affordable housing for everybody. Therefore, the program must be relatively selective in choosing candidates whom are best suited for habitat homes. In addition to meeting a specific list of requirements, a potential candidate must agree to do his/her part in contributing to the growth of the program. These responsibilities range from volunteering in the building process to increasing exposure for the program through various media outlets.
The program does not provide handouts for those in need. Instead, the program is aimed at providing housing at an affordable price with a no-interest mortgage for low-income families. There are various qualifications one must meet to become eligible for a housing opportunity. The program takes a multitude of aspects into consideration when deciding whether or not a family is eligible for a habitat home. These aspects are all largely concerned with a familys specific economic situation.
To be considered for a habitat home, one must meet an assortment of qualifications. First, one must demonstrate that s/he is in need of housing. Some considerations the program will take into account include families who currently reside in homes which are unsafe or overcrowded. Additionally, overpriced housing may also be considered a qualification for program assistance.
Individuals who receive assistance must also be willing to become involved with the program. Those who receive housing must devote at least 350 hours of volunteer work to the program. Furthermore, those receiving assistance must be prepared to share their stories and experiences with the media as means of increasing exposure for the Habitat program. Media outlets which will increase exposure may come from newspapers, television, magazines, and online sources.
It is also essential that potential candidates are able to provide recommendations from employers. One must build a commendable character profile in order to qualify for a home through Habitat for Humanity. Furthermore, the candidate must be able to follow through with the commitments made to the program in exchange for a no-interest housing mortgage.
Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, an individual receiving assistance must meet a set of specific conditions regarding his/her economic status. Candidates may not be unemployed. Potential candidates are expected to have a steady source of income which may either be from job salary or disability pay. Additionally, the candidates income must be high enough to be able to pay off the interest-free mortgage within 30 years. Typically, payments on Habitat housing will fall between monthly payments of $450 and $550, depending on the location and size of the home.
Another consideration concerning a candidates economic situation includes ones credit history. Typically, a candidate will have a credit history that is acceptable; however, the candidate will not qualify if his/her credit is adequate enough to be approved for a standard mortgage. Monthly debts must not surpass 41% of a potential candidates income.
