Who Should Get A Hearing Test?

A hearing test can be an important step for many people

. It answers questions and provides information about the current state of someone's ability to process sound. However, many people put off this very important screening because they feel there is nothing to worry about or they may not know where to get help. It is important to have a screening from your doctor annually, but at the age of 60 or over, you should have a specialist screen you. This way, you can have the confidence you need to know that you are able to hear at the best possible level.

Should You Get One?

Do you think you need a hearing test? You can often tell there is something changing, but only if you look at the big picture over a long period of time. The following are some signs to look for in your own ability to listen.

Do you struggle to understand what people have to say unless they are looking at you? Do you find it difficult to understand their voice or to make out words? It may seem as though they are mumbling.

Do you find yourself overwhelmed with the inability to do the things you used to do. Going to the movies, for example, can be hard to do. You may struggle with the inability to hear music well.

When you visit a friend's home, do you struggle to hear the television or radio even though they seem to have no problem hearing it? This could be a sign of a problem, too.

Individuals who are experiencing any of these signs should have a screening to determine if there is a problem and, if so, what can be done about it.

Do Your Loved Ones Need It?

Sometimes, it is not the actual patient who realizes that this type of screening is necessary. Sometimes, family members, especially those who live with the person, may realize there is a problem sooner. If you have to repeat yourself repeatedly, for example, this could be an indication of a problem. In some men and women, it becomes difficult to hear specific types of sounds. They may not hear the telephone ring, for example, or the bell at the door. Look for symptoms like this in your loved ones and then encourage them to get the screenings necessary.

A hearing test is an important step in improving your ability to hear. Once you know there is a problem, you can then take steps to improve it. However, if you or a loved one do nothing, it will worsen and limit your quality of life.
