What is the definition of your next of kin? Does your next of kin mean that one particular person is related more to you than another

? In cases of family law, the answer to this question is yes - in some instances they are more related.

In special cases of family law, the level of kinship will certainly matter, and in some cases, people related by blood have a higher level of kinship.

The term 'next of kin' is mostly used in times of death. By law it refers to the person who is entitled to inherit something from another person, especially if they die and have not issued a will. The surviving spouse of the deceased is at the higher level, and is closely followed by blood relations. The people at the top level are usually parents or children and on the second level are sisters, brother and grandparents.

If a person dies, the legal procedure for giving out their assets worth over a certain amount is known as probate. This is a process that involves verifying the will if there is one, or by dividing the estate between the next of kin and blood relatives. If no heirs can be found, then probate genealogy is used. This is where probate solicitors or trusts officers are requested to locate a beneficiary. These people are often known as heir hunters. However, in cases of probate, the location of the next of kin is pretty straight forward.

Child custody and the next of kin are little bit more complicated. If a child is unfortunate to be left without a parent, another organisation is responsible for the location of the child's next of kin.
