The DePuy hip recall of the ASR (artificial surface replacement) hip implants that was announced on August 26, 2010 came after the device was offered at around six years between 2003 and 2010. The recall was due to alarming number complaints and a high revision surgery rate of the device.

Data showed that around 12% of patients (1 in 8) who have been subjected to the ASR resurfacing device and 13% of patients (1 in 8) who had received the ASR total hip replacement needed to have a revision in their surgery.

DePuy Orthopedics Inc. announced a voluntary recall of their ASR XL Acetabular Hip System and DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System meaning that they will be conducting additional testing and monitoring necessary. The ASR systems that are affected by the recall are both marketed in July 2003. This means that patients who received their hip surgery before July 2003 do not need to worry. However those who had their hip implants on or before July 2003 should determine if they have been subjected to DePuy ASR and if they should be part of the DePuy hip recall.

Individuals who received the ASR systems should go undergo tests with the help of their surgeons to know if their hip is working in proper condition or whether their body is having reactions to the metal particles produced by the wear of the elements in the ASR Hip. They may have to go through an X-ray examination to allow the surgeon to evaluate if the ASR systems are in their right positions, if there are any damages to the bone or if the ASR hip systems are still attached properly to the bone. If the x-rays show that there are problems with the ASR hip system, the surgeon may recommend surgery to replace it.

Additional blood testing may also be required to assure that the ASR hip systems are functioning well. Blood tests will show the level of microscopic metal particles around your hip. If the test results show a high level of these metal particles, they may be a need of a second blood test to keep track of the level of these particles in your blood. If the second blood test still shows a high level, the surgeon may conduct several tests like MRI or ultrasound test. If the tests show a reaction to the particles, the surgeon may recommend a surgery to replace your implant.

DePuy Orthopedics Inc. intends to cover reasonable costs of testing if you need services related to DePuy hip recall. Bills for services should be submitted to your insurance company or payor in the usual process. DePuy will then reimburse you for your expenses associated to the ASR recall.
