Who's In The Running For The U.s. Ryder Cup Team?

On September 7th Ryder Cup Captain Corey Pavin will announce the last four American

golfers making the 12 man roster to face the European contingent on their soil for the 38th Ryder Cup, Oct. 1-3. Pavin will have a close look at those on his short list during the first two tournaments on the FedEx Cup schedule, The Barclays this week and again next week at the Deutsche Bank Championship.

With the results of PGA Championship in, eight of the twelve members of Corey Pavin's Ryder Cup team have been decided. Four are veterans of the battle with the European squad, Phil Mickelson, Hunter Mahan, Jim Furyk and Steve Stricker. And four have never played for the Cup, Bubba Watson, Dustin Johnson, Matt Kuchar and Jeff Overton who will become the first member of a U.S. Ryder Cup team never winning a PGA Tour event. All qualified based on points accumulated over a two-year period.

As is always the case the remaining four spots are fraught with controversy with any of the 9 thru 20 point earners, and more, in line to be chosen by Captain Pavin and his four captain's assistants, Tom Lehman, Davis Love III, Jeff Sluman and Paul Goydos.

Those in contention for the four remaining spots:

9Th -Anthoney Kim:coming off a hand injury. Missed the cut in PGA Championship, and in the Wyndham this past week.

10th -Lucas Glover:Ryder Cup veteran. Missed the cut by 2 strokes in the PGA, 7th in the Wyndham..

11th -Zach Johnson:3rd in the PGA. Solid Cup veteran.

12th -Tiger Woods:Having difficulty regaining his No. 1 in the World form. 28th in PGA.

13th -Bo Van Pelt:28th in PGA. A very dark horse.

14th -Stewart Cink:Has Ryder Cup whiskers, playing well lately, 18th in PGA.

15th -Ben Crane:Consistent the past two years but a dark horse, 39th in PGA.

16th -Ricky Barnes:Missed PGA cut. Maybe next year.

17th -Nick Watney:Dismal showing in PGA eliminated as a choice.

18th -Sean O'Hair:Consistent, a future star next year.

19th -J.B. Holms:Another dark horse, well at least a gray one. 24th in PGA.

20th -Rickie Fowler:58th in PGA. Probably next year.

Although it is Anthony Kim's lifelong goal to make the Ryder Cup team, at this point in the process, I believe Corey would select Stewart Cink over the recovering Kim. I would be shocked if Glover, Johnson and Woods aren't selected, theyre shoe-ins. But with a good to great showing in the next two weeks anyone could nab one of the four remaining positions.

The Course Celtic-Manor

The venue,The Tewnty Ten Courseat Celtic-Manor, Newport, South Wales, will maintain the fervor accompanying each Ryder Cup. The layout, situated in the Usk Valley, a somewhat flat course with few trees but makes up for that with ample water. With three par 5's over 600 yards including the finishing hole where water is uppermost in the mind of those who think of going for the green in two. The 9th, a 666 yard par 5 the longest hole in championship golf. The 14th, a 413 yard par 4, where some will be tempted to drive over the lake to avoid a second shot over yet another lake if the decision on the drive was made on the side of caution. The Twenty Ten gives the golfer ample choices which could determine the winner and losers depending on the decisions made and the all important execution.
