Why Are Eating Disorders Such As Anorexia And Bulimia On The Rise?

The two main psychological conditions that are linked to eating disorders are Anorexia and Bulimia

. These two eating disorders have had a much higher profile over the last few years. Both eating disorders are associated with young people especially, teenagers and in most cases young women. In some cases the age can be as young as 11.

These conditions are highly complex eating disorders that are centred on food.

Over the last 15 years the number of cases of anorexia and bulimia has increased. The fingers of blame have been commonly pointed at the fashion industry. A couple of years previously the fashion industry used painfully thin models to promote the latest designer collections down the catwalks of all the latest fashion shows. The fashion media have been blamed for promoting an unhealthy image in these very thin models. The reality is that to maintain this light weight requires these models to abstain from eating food. As this thinness is being promoted as beauty impressionable young girls are being pressurised in to being thin. However, the reality is that these skinny models do not represent the average teenage girl. These pictures of skinny models are plastered all over the magazines and posters making many young girls unhappy about their size and appearance.

Many young girls who an obsessive fear of putting on weight or looking fat can develop chronic eating disorders as follows:

Anorexia

With this eating disorder the sufferer avoids food at all costs. They starve themselves to the point that causes very serious weight and muscle loss from their body. The psychological aspects of this condition are the victims distorted image they have of themselves. Even when they are painfully thin they still see themselves as being overweight

The health complications of anorexia can be many. They can include a fall in blood pressure and vitamin deficiency. As the condition continues and more weight is lost the body grows a thin layer of hair on the body as a reaction to conserve heat. This eating disorder eventually leads to a breakdown of the bodys major organs.

Bulimia

With this eating disorder the sufferer is commonly young and female. The common symptoms with this disorder are the habit of binge eating then followed by forced vomiting to bring the food up. With bulimia the victim has a craving for food whereas, with anorexia there is an avoidance of food. Once the victim has satisfied their need for food, feelings of guilt and self disgust take over. With bulimia the health complications can result in rotten teeth caused by the stomach acid, ulcers and kidney problems.
