Why Are Evaporative Coolers The Green Choice?

Many homeowners are worried about their impact on the environment

, but still want to have control over the temperature in their home, especially during the summer season when the heat can become unbearable. However, some models of air conditioners can prove to be harmful to the environment.

For this reason, evaporative coolers are a popular choice in many homes. Rather than recycling internal air, evaporative coolers draw air from outside and cool it. So why are evaporative coolers the green choice? And what can you do if they aren't a viable option?

Use Less Electricity

Evaporative coolers use a minor percentage of the electricity conventional air conditioners use. This is because they don't involve complex engineering - they work through simple processes of natural cooling. As an extra benefit for homeowners this means evaporative coolers are easier and cheaper to maintain.

Performance

Evaporative coolers actually work their best at higher temperatures, so homeowners don't need to use additional sources of cooling. With conventional air-conditioning units homeowners are often tempted to make their unit work even harder, for a lower temperature, rather than allowing the unit time to cool the air down. This means that the unit is using more energy, and therefore impacting negatively on the environment.

Low Carbon Footprint

One of the key problems with regular air conditioners is that they can leave a high carbon footprint. Evaporative coolers, on the other hand, leave a very low carbon dioxide footprint.

Don't Use Refrigerants

Conventional air-conditioning units work by using refrigerants; however evaporative coolers have no need of this system. This means that the environmentally damaging effects of refrigerants are not an issue with evaporative coolers.

Can't Have An Evaporative Cooler?

For many reasons, some homes and businesses are not viable for evaporative coolers. Evaporative coolers are not as versatile as split systems, which supply heating and cooling. They also work best in humid environments. Air conditioning units are a more common option in stores and large homes, as they can provide a greater capacity for cooling.

If you can't have an evaporative cooler, you can still care for the environment. Choose a unit with a high energy star rating and combine it with other cooling methods such as blinds or fans. This not only gives you the opportunity to protect the environment, it also allows you to stay comfortable even during the summer season where the heat can easily become unbearable.
