Why Are People Talking About War Horse?

Puppetry in plays and musicals has usually been met with a negative reaction as they often look to kid-like and amateur for the big West End stages

. In recent years though, this has not necessarily been the case with the huge success of the comedy musical Avenue Q along with many others. War Horse on the other hand is a little different as the puppets have been used beautifully to tell an incredibly sad and heart warming story, which has brought with it incredible critical acclaim. The show is even being brought to the big screen with Hollywood director Stephen Speilberg at the helm.

The story is set at the outbreak of World War One where a young soldiers beloved horse is sold to the cavalry and shipped to France. The young soldier is soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary odyssey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man's land. The story goes on to follow the soldiers journey in finding his faithful horse and bringing him back home. The War Horse show is built around the horses who are brought to life by life-size puppets that move around beautifully to convey the real movement of the horses as well as the emotion of the piece. These life-sized puppets by the internationally renowned Handspring Puppet Company lead us on a gripping journey through history.

This touching story of War Horse has been adapted for the stage by acclaimed childrens writer Michael Morpurgo, from the original book by Nick Stafford, and the stage show has been a huge sell out success at the National Theatre.
