Why Close Combat Fighting is More Effective than Sports Martial Arts

Close Quarters Combat is a ferocious but precise science of inflicting pain, injury, and even death. CQC's primary objective is self-protection, but in real fights, a party may end up severely injured or in extreme cases, lose their life.

Respect for your opponent in the middle of a streetfight is not practical and most likely to earn you a ride in an ambulance. An assailant or attacker may not share your sense of fair play.

There are no rules and no promises in a dirty street-fight. Real weapons (chains, knives, iron bars), biting, clawing, group attacks and group stomping are all very real possibilities. That's where a close combat system comes in.

While we learnefficient fighting techniques in a martial arts dojo or a kwoon, and practise these in various moves and drills, with varying degrees of contact, these only go so far to prepare us for the immense emotional and physical stress of an actual encounter with someone wishing to cause us harm.

Streetfights are not stopped because one of the combatants cuts or injures himself, or because they run out of breath. Streetfights stop when one party is unable to continue.

They become helpless, unconscious, severely injured or dead. The winner of the duel may stop short of kicking the loser to death when he is down, but that would be a matter of luck as much as anything else.

To win a streetfight, you must respond to the attacker with equal, and in some cases, even greater, ferocity. To overcome your fear and pain in a violent attack, you have to flood your system with adrenalin.

Sometimes, there is no option but to be prepared to act immediately and make your opponents unable to continue their attack, by any means necessary, fair or unfair, and with complete ruthlessness.

Any second thoughts or philosophical principles that restrict your tactics in a streetfight will be giving your opponent an advantage. If your life is potentially at stake, you cannot afford your opponent ANY advantage.

Proper training in close combat provides us with means for the reduction of stress through physical activity, and breathing exercises. We learn to deal with combat fear, aggression and pain in a controlled environment, and develop discipline and tolerance for physical pain.

In a real-world fight, chances are that you may forget all the fancy moves you learned from your martial arts instructor.

While I am a proponent of martial arts and even practice it myself to develop mental and physical well-being, I do not recommend it as an insurance policy against the violence that is prevalent in society and is experienced everyday by millions of people.
