Why Do Bullies Bully?
Why do some individuals become bullies? Firstly it is necessary to identify some
of the reasons behind bullying before deciding on any preventative steps. This is because only after these reasons have been identified can they be questioned and solutions found.
Part of the reason why bullies become bullies can be found by questioning the background of the mind of the bully.
Problems at home
In many instances bullies are kids who themselves are going through a tough time at home. They themselves can be a victim of neglect or quite the opposite - overly pampered. In either extreme, these kids take on a selfishness of mind where they cannot feel the pain of others. Rather, they mockingly think of others as feeble wimps who deserve to be bullied. In this mindset of insensitivity they mistakenly think that this apathy and indifference to others makes them "more grown up" and adult in nature. In their haste to be more adult like, they become misguided, confused and glorify the act of bullying.
Parenting issues
This may seem a little bit strange, but there are some parents who do not stop their child from bullying. They rather tend to think that bullying is part of the growing up process and builds character. In many cases, adults themselves experienced bullying as a child and think it to be an acceptable practice. It is important to realise that this thinking is flawed and bullying has become unacceptable in today's society. Parents need to understand this fact and realise that bullying can be harmful to the bully as well as the person being bullied. Parents are the voice of reasonability and set the yardstick for their children. This is why parents have to stress that bullying is unacceptable and not give their children any justification to carry on with this practice.
Scared of "goodness"
An interesting observation is that bullies know that they are "being bad". They find fun and acceptance with other bullies in being bad and target the so called "good" people. Good, means people who are hard working, do not step out of line and who do not cause any problems. In a strange twist, the bullies are afraid of anyone else being good and are jealous of these so called good people. They are afraid, because they are scared of being outnumbered and themselves having to conform and become "good". So, in this state of insecurity they try hard to suppress any goodness they can find or feel, both in their hearts and others.
