Why Do We Smoke?

*** Do Not Quit Smoking! Click Here *** Such a simple question, and for smokers we have a million and one reasons why we smoke. Of course we all know that every single reason we have for smoking is absolutely crazy. But for those of you who do smoke your reasons you think are very valid, and I'm sure they sound good enough to you to keep on lighting up another cigarette. Unfortunately I hate to tell you all this, but their are no valid reasons to still be smoking. The first reason everyone will say is stress, and why not use stress as a great way to keep telling yourself you need that cigarette. Everyone has an excuse for smoking and some of those excuses seem at the time like a good enough reason to smoke. I know, I use to use the excuse of caregiving. I took care of my parents for many years, and if that doesn't top the stress meter nothing does. In a way I suppose it was because of taking care of them, that helped me to quit smoking. I was sitting in front of the TV one evening watching something mindless to take my mind off of everything I had to do the next day, and I started coughing and could not catch my breath. Of course I went outside to have a cigarette, (I never smoked in the house) and kept coughing and smoking. Hey you don't have to hit me over the head more then 100 times or so that the light bulb went on. I realized then the object I was holding in my hand was going to kill me faster then the stress of taking care of mom & dad. I really hated to admit that to myself, but the facts were starring right at me. What was causing my coughing and shortness of breathe had nothing to do with the stress of being a caregiver. I had finally come to realize the show was over, and if I did not stop smoking soon, smoking was going to stop me, and then what would happen to my loved ones. Smoking is a selfish habit, that we like to blame on other people. If we didn't lose our job, we could quit smoking. If a loved one wasn't ill, we could quit smoking. Believe me, I used all these excuses and anything else I could think up for why I smoked. Until finally one day you just run out of excuses, and face reality. We smoked because we wanted to. Not because of any situation in our life or because of any other person in our life. We just wanted to smoke. So now we have to want not to smoke. I won't kid you this is not going to be easy. But when you reach that point, that you really just do not want another cigarette, it is not as hard as I thought.About the Author:
