Why Golfing Can Be Stressful
If you are a golfer then it is a good bet that you wish you could play better and be more consistent
. Practice doesn't seem to make any difference to performance on the golf course, and errors appear every hole. Imagine being able to get rid of all the mistakes and the difference would be dramatic.
We keep telling ourselves what not to do. Thinking as we stand over the ball, thoughts like not hitting it into the bunker, or the water, usually results in that very thing happening. All that is necessary is to turn it round, and say to ourselves, that we're going to hit this onto the green. It's all about positive self talk, not about thinking what could go wrong.
We think all the time about our bad shots. The last time we played this particular hole and made a mess of it. Perhaps the iron shot we have just fluffed. Just forget about it, you can still make a decent score at a hole with a good shot to follow a bad shot. Golf is all about learning from our mistakes and then forgetting them.
One mistake many golfers make is to start thinking about how they are swinging a club. It is likely to have awful consequences. Everyone's swing should be done without thought, it is automatic, and analysing it will almost certainly put a golfer right off his game. The best advice is just to hit the ball and not think about it.
Sometimes you just get plain unlucky, and a ball will bounce badly into a sand trap or the rough. That's just bad luck, so don't beat yourself up for the shot you made. Don't start imagining your swing is all wrong, because you'll just spend the next few holes analysing your swing whilst your game falls apart.
Some golfers get very depressed when they play against someone better who hits the ball out of sight. Don't be like that, instead you can use their form as inspiration. When a better golfer congratulates you on a good shot, feel good about yourself. There is no disgrace in losing if you have played well, and if you play well you'll have enjoyed yourself which is what it is all about.
Onlookers can easily put you off if you let them. A head up fluff is embarrassing, but there isn't a golfer in the world who hasn't done that in public. Try to force yourself a few times to tee off in front of an audience, and your fears will vanish.
All you really have to do is to watch the ball. Keep your head still and slow down. Golf is a wonderful game to be enjoyed, and you will as long as you keep your thoughts positive and your memory short.
