Why Is Adultery No Longer The Main Reason For Divorce In The Uk?
I"m sure we"re all aware of the fact that adultery is no longer the main reason why people file for divorce in the UK by now
. As I work within what has been termed the "divorce arena" by some, I found this to be an extremely interesting finding and, as a result, didn"t think twice about disclosing it to my friends whilst we all enjoyed customary Friday night drinks.
This was, in the most part, a very poor decision. My disclosure not only killed, but massacred our conversation. The only thing missing from the ten or so seconds of uncomfortable silence that followed was a selection of tumbleweeds labouring their way across scorched earth. In fact, if we had been back in the old Wild West, I"m convinced that one of my friends would have removed their pistol from its holster and emptied the contents of its chamber into my chest as a result of my pseudo faux pas.
This was a Friday night after all and not the time for such serious discussion. I accepted my mistake (and the mockery that followed) before moving onto more nonchalant conversation. Still, though, I could not help but wonder why it would appear that more and more spouses are no willing to accept their partner"s infidelities.
Every case of infidelity that I have encountered amongst my friends and relatives has always, without exception, ended in a separation or divorce. Many of the affronted partners claimed that they wanted to forgive, forget and re-forge a loving relationship and, true to their word, tried to make this happen. In each instance, though, their efforts failed ""the sense of betrayal simply too great to overcome. I can appreciate that some couples will be able to proceed with married life following them having discovered an affair, but they will clearly be a minority. I simply don"t understand this change.
I have had discussion upon discussion about the matter; read any number of articles, but still none of the possible reasons put forward "" the economy, liberal attitudes, celebrity cultures "" have left me feeling satisfied. So, dear reader, I put it to you: why is adultery no longer the main reason for divorce in the UK?
