Why Is Santas Suit Red?

Santa suits are worn by people who want to dress up and portray the Westernised Santa

Claus; they are red and white suits that are often mistaken to be the work of Coca Cola. Whilst Coca Cola are indeed the most common reference for the Westernised Santa Claus, he was being painted in that manner long before the infiltration of the Coca Cola advertising team took to the trend.

For 81 years, the Coca Cola Santa has been the answer to peoples question of what Santa looks like. However, before their finalised look of the jolly gift giver, there were many variations of him that existed. Many people incorrectly assume that Haddon Sundblom brought the suit to life when he designed the suit in his advertising work for the Coca-Cola Company. Sundbloms work did standardise the western image of Santa, and popularised the image of the red suit with white fur trim. Thanks to the approachable look of Coca Colas happy and chubby man, many people choose to dress up as him for Christmas especially those with children. A professional Santa Claus can be seen in most shopping centres around December time.

The Santa we know today was first bought about by Thomas Nast in 1892, long before Sundbloms advertising was bought about. Nast created Santas red and white suit, although originally he created a slim Santa who could slide down chimneys. Full sized Santa was created later on and was later adopted by the Coca Cola company. Before Nast changed the face of Santa, he was often drawn in a tan outfit although Nast himself would also draw Santa in a green suit. Thanks to Coca Colas long lasting stand with the jolly man in the red suit, this image of Santa is the one we are most familiar with.

This is why costumes, and other festive related things, are often in red and white. Green is sometimes added to this, and it could be for many reasons. One of the reasons green is taken in to Christmas could be thanks to Nasts older representation of Santa, in the green suit with white trim. It could also be included thanks to the green fir trees that are popular throughout Christmas.

There are many different colours within the world of the festive season, yet red and white are clearly the predominant ones. This means that red and white are incredibly popular colours to keep in a life and a wardrobe within the festive season. Throughout the Christmas period, many shops and retailers will have various products of white and red available to buy, wear and use throughout the entirety of December.
