Why Many Fail To Pass the Police Recruitment and Police Test

Every year, around 65,000 people of all ages apply for police recruitment but less than 6

,000 make it through and achieve their dream police jobs. The number of applicants will surely go up in light of the UK government's announcement to increase police and armed forces recruitment quotas due to homeland security concerns.

In applying for police recruitment, applicants must remember that even before their applications are accepted, a recruitment assessment team examines everything at all stages of the process and applicants need to make an impression at every stage, especially during the police role play.

If an applicant fails to demonstrate even basic understanding of key areas as well as core competencies then the application will not be accepted and cannot move beyond the police test.

The police recruitment process examines seven key skill areas:

Race and Diversity

Community and Customer Focus

Problem Solving through police role play

Effective Communication

Resilience

Team Working

Personal Responsibility

The assessment team makes sure that applicants are assessed on each of the 7 competencies relevant to the role at least three times, except for Race and Diversity which will be assessed in every exercise. Thus, applicants must obtain the required level in each of the 7 areas in order to pass.

However, a whopping 75% of applicants who join police recruitment never even make it beyond the application form stage, let alone the police test. This means that only a small 25% are successful at such an early stage. The bad news is that the majority of candidates who fill in the police application form just hope for the best.

Coupled with the homeland security quota increase, the financial recession is affecting the quality of applicants and their chances of success. In times of economic uncertainty people turn to jobs and careers that are not only secure and safe but, also pay a reasonable salary and police jobs fit as a perfect match.

Thus, more and more people less qualified are applying to join police recruitment and the result is that the assessment team has more applications to sift through and find it increasingly difficult to separate quality candidates.
