Why People Eat Turkey On Thanksgiving Day

Every year, on the fourth Thursday of November

, American people would celebrate its traditional folk festival-Thanksgiving Day. This festival dates from 1621. That autumn, across the oceans, the British immigrants came to America, to thank God for the harvest, and they held 3-day carnival activities. From then on, this custom has been passed on and spread all the country. In 1863, President Lincoln declared Thanksgiving Day is an official national holiday.

Then why people eat turkey on Thanksgiving Day? This is based on the bible. In the Old Testament in Bible, there is some description. One day, Moses went to Sinai desert with Israelites, they have nothing to eat and drink, so, the Israelites began to complain. Then, Moses said if God heard their complaint, he would give them something to eat. The next day, there is a large number of quail flew and landed on their camp. Moses said to Israelites, this is the food provided by God, and then they eat happily. This may be the first Thanksgiving Day for Judaism. But there is no recording in bible about how the quail be made. It is supposed to be baked, for there is no water in desert and they cant steam it. Only baking doesn't need any cooker. They escaped from Egypt and didn't bring the expensive and bulky pot with them, and also in that time, there was no aluminum and iron. So, they must baked quail and baking is also the best way to cook quail. Therefore, in the Western culture, such content is formed, that is the birds are the gifts and succor given them by God, so they should bake those birds and best eat it on Thanksgiving Day.

There is also anther version about the origination of Thanksgiving Day. it is said at that time, the ancestors of the Northern Americans moved to the New World, but at their first landing, they faced the agricultural failure and what's the worse, they were hostile by the indigenous Indians. And at that time, it is right in the cold winter, they have nothing to eat, so they submitted to providence. Unexpectedly, a large number of turkeys coming from the distant location made them a survivor. So, people believe that it is God provide them turkey in order to help them pull throw. Thus, the custom to eat turkey on Thanksgiving Day has been formed.

Whether the two versions of the origination about Thanksgiving Day is true or not, we can't deny that eating turkey has always a habit for western people.
