Why People Have Anorexia or Bulimia
People nowadays are becoming more conscious with how they look and it is a fact that weight has been a big issue
. Because of this, many are suffering from either anorexia or bulimia. These are eating disorders that are related with behavioral and psychological changes.
These eating disorders can be inherited. There are researches claiming that a certain gene that is located on the Chromosome 1p is responsible in determining if you are prone to having an eating disorder, specifically anorexia. There are also scientists that study the hypothalamus, which is responsible in regulating the processes of metabolism. They have concluded that any dysfunction in this part of your brain may trigger the development of an eating disorder. Imbalances in the levels of the regulatory neurotransmitters in your brain may also be involved.
There are also childhood and past experiences that are involved in the development of anorexia or bulimia. If you are deprived in eating as an infant, this may progress into an eating disorder as you grow old. People especially children who are unable to eat regularly or in adequate amount can also result to either of the two disorders. The same thing will be experienced if you have negative perceptions and feelings about your physical appearance. Poor self-image and low self-esteem are reasons why you are pressured to lose weight and become thin.
Aside from the medical and scientific basis of having an eating disorder, it is also caused by the psychological and emotional state of the person. It has been observed that if you are depressed, you tend to binge. After a while, you will realize that you have consumed too much, which makes you worried that you might gain weight. This is considered as bulimia. On the other hand, depression that is related to your physical attributes such as excessive weight can also lead to anorexia. You tend to starve yourself and combine this with weight loss activities such as exercise and abuse of laxatives, diet pills and enemas.
With the practice of bingeing, purging or starvation, you may feel that you are in control of your weight. You may also feel calmed and in the state of euphoria. This is due to the sense of fulfillment that you will lose weight. Weight loss is considered as attractive by many people and this is the main reason why you are enticed to refrain from eating and even develop anorexia or bulimia.
