Why Satellite Broadband Is Good For Remote Areas
A satellite was launched last weekend; its sole purpose was to provide broadband to rural areas across Europe
. As political parties promise to provide broadband to rural areas across the UK they will be asking themselves: is satellite broadband a viable replacement for underground cables and wires?
Satellites have been providing broadband to much of rural America for a number of years now but this is the first time that the UK and Europe have a chance to access the internet via a satellite.
So the question the Satellite Hylas 1 needs to answer is can it replace underground wires and cables and provide a viable broadband deals to those living in rural parts of the country.
Launched last weekend in French Guyana Hylas 1 is estimated to be able to handle anything between 150.000 and 300.000 users at any one time, using its high tech wizardry to focus on the busiest areas at any one time.
Yet with a estimated maximum capacity of 300.000 it falls woefully short of the estimated 30 million across Europe who have inadequate or no access to the internet. Fear not another satellite is planning to be launched in spring 2011 which should hopefully double the number of users being able to access satellite broadband at any one time.
The fact the BT have signed a 1.2 million deal with Avanti communication shows that the powers that be do have some faith in satellites, with BT looking to utilise the technology across rural parts of the UK whilst it concentrates on Cornwall and the Scilly Isles.
Unfortunately it may take a number of years to resolve many of the expected teething problems which are expected to come from tariam satellite broadband.
Problems which include poor speeds or loss of communication all together with one satellite at the moment covering the whole of Europe we wait with bated breath if the dish can handle someone in rural Devon accessing the net the same time as someone the other side of the continent.
Whilst initial teething problems are to be expected it is important to remember that satellite broadband has been working well in the States for a while now and like with most thing its simply a waiting game to see just how well it works. One thing is for sure the Conservatives will be hoping that it is a success as it will take the pressure of them to provide broadband to rural areas of the UK.
