Indeed and paradoxically, the relatively high cost of teak furniture seems to be one of its greatest attractions; as people increasingly see it as a 'status symbol' and a sign of good taste, leading to the high demand for it, its high cost notwithstanding.

Now a question that tends to come up in the critical thinker's mind upon encountering the relatively high price tags associated with teak garden furniture is as to what causes them to be somewhat more costly. That is what we venture to find out.

To understand why teak furniture costs somewhat more than most other types of furniture, you need to take early cognizance of the fact that the wood from which such furniture is made (known as teak) is a rather rare wood. It is also a special type of wood, in terms of things like its ability to withstand the effect of the elements (things like moisture, sunshine and so on). As we will see, these two are the main factors behind the somewhat high cost of teak garden furniture.

Starting with the rarity issue, we notice that teak grows in very few places in the world. What that means is that to move it from those few places where it grows to the many places where it is needed, it has to be transported at considerable cost (it also being relatively heavy). It is also worth noting that very few countries grow their own teak, meaning that in most of the other places it is used, it is imported. What we end up with, then, is a situation where the price that the end user of the teak furniture pays has to take into account the considerable transportation costs, as well as the logistical costs and taxes associated with wood importation. That pushes up the price of the end product (in this case, teak garden furniture) considerably.

Turning to the 'qualities issue' we have already mentioned that teak is a rather hardy wood, able to withstand all manner of elements of nature (moisture, sunshine and so on). Now many people are cognizant of those qualities. They view teak furniture as a type of furniture you have to have buy only once in a lifetime, and never have to replace it on account of its having succumbed to the elements. This has the effect of making people yearn to own it. What that means is that, in spite of its being rare, there are many people demanding it. And as the basic demand-supply economics rules tell us, whenever the supply of something is limited (like the teak furniture in question), with the demand for it being high (in this case on account of the desirable qualities associated with teak), then its price has to go up. That, then, is the very same dynamic we witness in the pricing of teak garden furniture.
