Testing DNA for genealogy is becoming increasingly common with people around the world

. A lot of people test DNA with the hopes of finding out more about their past. A DNA test can reveal a lot about you and your ancestors. It can reveal whether you are related to a person without there being any documentation to prove it or it can reveal whether you share ancestors with individuals or a group of people with whom you share a surname. As scientists find out new and improved ways of unraveling the genetic code, ancestral relations with different people staying in different parts of the world are getting revealed. In fact DNA testing is quickly becoming a mainstream passion as more and more people are coming forward to have their DNA tested. People now have the opportunity to test DNA easily as many private companies have come up offering such services.

Testing DNA for genealogy has the ability of throwing light on ancestors by the comparison of specific sequences in persons who might be related. When people admit themselves to have their DNA"s tested, a cotton swab is used to collect DNA samples from inside the cheeks. Genealogists then sequence the DNA codes and compare it to the samples available on their database. There are quite a few reasons why people test DNA for genealogy. They are explained as follows:

There are mainly two kinds of DNA tests available for the common people, namely, the Y-chromosome test and the Mitochondrial DNA test. The first test is meant for finding out about the male line of the person who is being tested while the second is for the female line. Though both the tests are backed by strong scientific proof, the Y-chromosome test is considered to be more effective in finding out about one"s ancestors and relatives.

It may so happen that a group of families or even an individual wants to find out whether they are related with another group of families with the same or similar surname. People can test DNA for this. The male surname representative from each family has to submit his DNA sample which gets tested and is used in reconstructing the family tree back to the times when they had a common ancestor.

Persons may test DNA to find out whether they had a common ancestry with a family living in a different country from his own. In such cases, the ancestral signatures left by both the parties are necessary to find out whether the branches were close.

Persons test DNA and compare their ancestral signatures with those of others. This is done with the hope that they may find new relatives and ancestors they never knew about. In fact, finding relatives without any written documentation available also cannot be ruled out.
