Why Thermal Insulation Is Important

Energy efficiency is something that is important to all of us

. Not only does being as energy efficient as possible help the planet, but it can also enable us to spend less on utilities such as oil and electricity. There are plenty of things that we can do to make ourselves more energy efficient, from investing in energy saving bulbs to changing the cars we use. We can also make a difference by investing in some good quality thermal insulation for our homes.

Thermal insulation helps with efficiency in two main ways. In the cold winter months, it helps to stop heat from escaping the house, effectively trapping it inside so that we require less energy to heat our homes. And in the warmer summer months, the thermal insulation actually helps to keep our homes cooler than they would otherwise be. It does this by keeping the energy out.

You can save a significant amount of energy this way. Many people just have thermal insulation installed in their roof, which can save up to 25% of the energy you would usually spend on heating the house and up to 45% of the energy required to cool the house. However, you can save even more energy - and therefore more money - by extending the areas in which you install the thermal insulation. For instance, depending on your house, you can often also install it in certain wall cavities.

There are quite a few benefits of doing this. Obviously it works to save energy and thus money, but the thermal insulation has other positive points too. Even though you have to invest in it up front, it will more than pay for itself within a few years. It also helps to eliminate condensation within your house and can double up as soundproofing, depending on the type of insulation you have decided to go with.

Above all, the insulation helps to keep your home at a comfortable temperature all year round. Depending on your house and the area you live in, you will naturally still need to use energy to heat and cool your home, but you hopefully shouldn't experience such extremes of temperature once you have had the thermal insulation installed.

There are a few different types of thermal insulation that you could have installed in your home. For example, bulk insulation has lots of tiny pockets. These trap the air as it tries to escape your house, acting as good resistance to the flow of heat. You can also get reflective insulation, which works to reflect heat away during the summer. It is often installed between bricks and plasterboard, plus a layer of air to allow it to work to best effect.

Many people already have a good level of thermal insulation in their homes, but many more do not - or the insulation they currently have does not meet the recommended standards. If you haven't got adequate insulation, it is certainly worth investigating the possibility of installing some so that you can enjoy the benefits and uses that it has to offer.
