Why Won't My Car Start

When you suspect a problem in your car ignition switch

, it is important to deal with it as soon as possible. This is true because without a bug free switch, your car will not start. I will try to explain the most common problems that you might face with your ignition switch and hat you can do when such problems arise.

The ignition switch is the interface between you and your car's engine. It is the way you instruct your engine to start working which stresses the importance of regularly maintenance. To be able to trouble shoot its problems, you need to understand its structure and mechanisms. The switch is composed of two devices. First device is the ignition cylinder which is the device where you insert your car keys and turn it to breathe life into your engine. The second device is a lock, electronic lock that is placed behind that cylinder and is responsible for the actual starting of the cat. These two components maybe separated or bundled in the same assembly.

Ignition switches have multiple switching options. The first of these would be the off option that turns everything, as expected, off. The on option allows you to deliver power to some electric devices in your car without starting it. This will allow you for example to listen to the radio without starting the engine and burning unnecessary fuel. After the on options is the start option. When you turn the key to this option, you power the starter motor, which is responsible for initializing the engine of the car. The starter motor should not be kept spinning after the engine has started. This is why the on position is spring loaded and once you leave it free, the key will jump back to the on position leaving your engine running. If your car does not start after you go through these options n sequence, it could be that you have a faulty ignition cylinder or that the electric switch behind it is not working properly. The reason might be something else, but there are some symptoms and signs you can look for to check if it is indeed the ignition cylinder that is causing the problem.

First you need to eliminate the other possible causes of the same problem. Pretty much everything under your hood can cause the car not to start. Check you batteries and your wires for corrosion. To check your battery, use a voltmeter to make sure that it delivers no less than 12 volts. If everything seems okay, then you need to check the ignition switch. Turn the switch into the on option and make sure that the head lights work. If they do work, then try to switch to start position and make sure that they dim. If they don't, then it is absolutely an ignition switch problem. Now, the easy part is over. It is time to fix the ignition switch. There are lots and lots of reasons that could cause your ignition switch to malfunction. These could range from the cylinder to the electrical switch inside. Take it from me, when it comes to ignition switch, just replace the whole thing and save yourself a lot of frustration. After all, it is not so hard to replace an ignition switch.
