, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency. One of the common waste materials buried in large quantities in landfills all over the world is plastic. Due to its durability, plastic degrades very slowly and some lasts for hundreds of years. Plastics are used in almost everything, from water bottle containers to credit cards, and due to their durable and flexible properties, they are highly consumed and heavily produced in almost all industries. Unfortunately, they are also discarded in large quantities every day.

Credit, membership, bank and gift cards are normally made of polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, which will soften and melt when heated. The burning of PCV emits toxic fumes that are harmful to the ozone layer. As a result, companies and environmental groups are lobbying for biodegradable membership card, credit card and gift card creations to replace the conventional PVC types.

Here are three reasons why a business or organization should start using eco-friendly varieties to distribute to its customers and membeship.

The United States Census Bureau recorded that 576.4 million credit and 507 million debit cards were in circulation in the United States in 2009, and that did not include the quantity produced for other types. The amount of PVC cards being discarded to the landfills is enormous and will exist under the earth for hundreds of years before degradation takes place. Biodegradable types, on the other hand, break down when they come in contact with microorganisms, leaving no toxic effect on the environment. Once they come in contact with fertile environments such as lake, ground soil, river and compost. Disintegration takes place between nine months and five years. By reducing the use of PVC cards, toxic waste will be minimized, thus creating a cleaner environment for the future generation.

Biodegradables Are Durable

Biodegradable membership, credit, gift, insurance and reward cards are as durable as PVC. They can be stored in one's wallet and survive from daily wear and tear usage. Most have expiration dates lasting up to maximum of three years, so biodegradable materials are good substitutes for PVC varieties, as they will not cause harm to the environment after they are discarded.

Biodegradable Cards Look Good

A biodegradable membership card can look as good as a PVC one. Biodegradable cards are flexible enough to be printed on by laser or digital technology. This enables them to have fancy and colorful designs. They can also carry personalized images and designs, which are especially attractive to be used as a membership, gift and loyalty card.
