Why You Should Make It Your Custom To Send Cards

The world is changing at an incredible pace, so much so that every day there seems

to be some new piece of technology to replace an apparently outdated and inefficient method of doing something. Unquestionably, the biggest change to our world in the last couple of decades has been the internet. We use the internet for absolutely everything. Despite the fact that, in the long, long history of the word, the internet is a relatively new invention, society has changed so dramatically following its introduction that the vast majority of us are now entirely dependent on it.

Think about it for a second... you can literally use the internet to do everything. E-mails have completely revolutionised the way in which the entire world communicates with each other. Doing business is quicker than ever before and keeping in touch with friends and relatives up to thousands of miles away is as easy as chatting to a friend that lives twenty minutes up the road.

Aside from communicating and keeping in touch, we also use the internet for a wide variety of weird and wonderful things. You can do your weekly food shopping without leaving your house, for example. You can watch films, listen to music, do a little shopping, find out the latest news and research topics of interest. With the click of a button we can book flights that will take us to the other side of the world. We can even book the hotel that we'll stay in while we're there, as well as airport transfers and day trips. We can use the internet to find potential love interests and then again use it to organise both our wedding and honeymoon if we're lucky enough to fall in love.

With this relentless technological development constantly pushing us to newer and dizzier heights of convenience and efficiency, it is very easy to forget that not everything in our lives actually needs to happen within light seconds of us clicking a mouse. Whilst the internet is convenient, it's also training us to become increasingly impatient, as we expect things to happen faster than ever before.

Of course, another symptom of the internet is that everyday life is becoming a lot more impersonal. Instead of leaving our houses and interacting with other people, more and more people choose to simply sit in front of a computer screen and type away. Now this isn't always a bad thing, as in many ways the internet means we're more able to keep in touch with friends and family than ever before. On the other hand though, our need for speed coupled with an increasingly impersonal society means that we're losing many of the more slow-paced the traditions that make life a little lovelier.

Take birthday cards for example. Once upon a time giving and/or sending birthday cards was something everybody did to wish their friends and family members all the best on their birthdays. Today, however, there are a wide variety of digital cards that can be sent directly to someone's inbox in a matter of mere seconds. This is, of course, much quicker and easier than sending cards via snail mail. Not only can they be cheaper, but internet cards also cut out the need to leave the house to go to the shop to buy cards and stamps, write the cards and post them in time. With electronic internet cards it doesn't matter if you've left it until the last minute, because upon clicking 'send' an e-card will appear in the recipient's inbox almost instantaneously.

That being said, electronic cards are also void of all the charm that makes sending birthday cards such a wonderful custom. Firstly, there's something really satisfying about being able to physically hold birthday cards in your hand, in the same way that it's nicer to own a CD than download the album. Furthermore, if people send you cards you know that they've taken time out of their busy lives to think about you and to go out of their way to wish you well. There is also something undeniably quaint and charming about receiving cards in the post this is a way people have been communicating with each other for countless years and is a beautiful but underrated tradition.

So next time you think that birthday cards are too much hassle to bother with, just remember how lovely it is to see that envelope on your doormat in the morning and open all those cards from family and friends!!
