All films-indie or mainstream- need promotional products in order to have more viewers. What's the use of making a great film if no one will watch it simply because they are not aware that such a film exists? Let us face it-filmmaking is a business and all businesses need promotion and marketing. Do not worry. Having promotional products for your film will not make your movie less artistic. A bit commercial, yes- but promotional products will not affect the overall beauty and significance of your film. If anything, promotional products just help you and other filmmakers reach out to more people so that the message of your films will not be limited to a certain crowd.

There are lots of promotional products in the market. All you have to do is think of the ones that best represent your film and could capture your target audience. You can either have a conventional promotional product or a custom-designed promotional product.

The conventional promotional products are those generic items that are printed with the film's logo, artwork, and copy. Examples of conventional promotional products are mugs, shirts, water bottles, tumblers, standard key chains, and bags. They are just random promotional products that do not necessarily reflect anything about the film. Yes, they are still custom-designed in the products are printed with a unique artwork but the materials are still generic. The good thing about choosing conventional promotional products is that they are relatively cheaper and faster to manufacture. You do not have to think too hard of a kick-ass concept, the materials may be cheaper, and the production time is faster because printing companies are familiar with the materials.

And then there are promotional products that reflect the film's concept. For example; if your film is about teenage pregnancy, you can have customized condoms made with your film's logo on the packaging. Afterward, you can stash some of them in the comfort rooms or let some guys hand them over on the streets. Or if your film is about gambling, then you may choose playing cards or poker chips. Then you can customize these items with some trivia about the film. For me, these promotional products are more effective since they are well thought out and they are more viral compared to the conventional promotional products mentioned above.
