Many running and shoe shops offer gait analysis as part of the whole shoe buying
experience. However, what do you know about the person assessing your gait? Are
they qualified? Do they have experience in dealing with foot conditions and biomechanics?
A Podiatrist is an expert in all foot related conditions and ailments. They have undergone
intensive training to ensure that they know all there is to know about the foot and the biomechanics of the foot.
Before a gait analysis your Podiatrist will physically examine your lower limbs with a particular focus on any current injuries. This physical examination will allow the Podiatrist to identify which structures in your anatomy are injured and to what extent they are injured. If necessary some equipment may be used in this assessment. Gait Analysis should include a dynamic assessment which looks at your feet without shoes or socks. Assessments completed only with footwear on can never give a complete picture.
It is vital that before any gait analysis is carried out that your Podiatrist understands your anatomy and also the quality and range of motion available at each of your joints. This allows the Podiatrist to understand the mechanics of your movement and also what movement is possible for you.

If appropriate, the Podiatrist will agree a management plan with you to try to meet your aims. This may involve the production of custom made orthotics while you wait, or some clinics send their casts off to orthotic labs, in which case there may be a wait of 2-3 weeks. A course of Physiotherapy may be recommended. Physiotherapists often work alongside Podiatrists to treat sporting injuries and to ensure that you receive the highest level of care at the podiatry clinic.
In short, a Podiatrist has expertise and specialist knowledge in all areas of foot care and foot health. They can give advice and their expert opinion on rehabilitation and even tips on how to aid your performance.
