Why you fail

Failing at something is one of the most demoralizing things that can happen, but have you ever tried to look back and find where you went wrong, or wondered what you were doing that's holding you back? This is why I want to talk about some of the facts of failure because I know it's really frustrating when you just can't seem to work out what happened.

Now I'm a firm believer in the motto of you only truly fail when you stop trying', but sometimes you hit a wall and you don't know what else to do. This usually happens when you deviate from whatever plan you'd made. Don't misunderstand though, plans can change and they should so they can stay current, but if you move away from it you lose that structure, and it becomes very easy to get lost. A well made plan should allow and incorporate change but still give you clear direction as to what you need to do next, so you never get lost.

Having a well structured plan is only half of the equation though because you need to have the motivation and the drive to carry out the plan as well. Without motivation you have no fuel to get you going or to push you through tough times and you will quickly find yourself slipping. The stronger the source of your motivation, the more focus you have the better your chances will be at succeeding. You should never try and do anything for superficial reasons though because you will never have enough fuel to get you to the finish line.

There are things you can do though that will help you along:

Make a plan: As I mentioned above a well structured and well formulated plan will greatly help your chances because it gives you direction and purpose, and it prevents you from getting lost. A good plan should be action oriented and aimed at inspiring you to move and get things done.

Find you're Motivation: Motivation is the fuel that drives, it's the fire in your belly that gets you excited and gets you moving. Without motivation or a strong reason for doing what you're doing you'll find yourself unable to complete any of the tasks you might set. Your motivation only needs to motivate you though even if it sounds silly to someone else as long as it gets you out of bed in the morning and working then it's a good goal.

Stay Accountable: Once you have your motivation it's important to stay accountable to your goals. You can't rely on other people to get you moving you need to have enough drive to do that yourself. You should be working to achieve your own goals so it's your responsibility to stay accountable to them.

Get a Training Partner: Having someone with similar goals and similar motivation is one of the best things you can do for your resolve. Having someone to lean on in tough times can really help get you through rough patches. This person though should be a positive force in your life though. You don't want to be training with someone who's constantly trying to drag you down and prevent you from reaching your potential.

Failing to prepare is preparing to fail is a phrase I use a lot and is the main reason why people fail at what they want to do. Just remember to get started, to make a plan, and to become accountable. If you can do all this goals will become all the more attainable.
