From site visitors' perspective, they are looking for information, services or products on internet in a least possible amount of time and minimal hassle. They are more likely to remain on website that serves them faster than on a slow loading website.

Now, a website stands to lose much more than visitors. It can lose rankings on search engines which have now become the de facto source of traffic.

Simple things like use of CSS, less use of images and efficient coding can prevent users from waiting to get the information they want. Intelligent use of AJAX can also alleviate many problems related to wastage of time. With little bit of tweaking you will find your website much more responsive and notice a discernible increase in positive indicators such traffic and page views.
