Wild World Of Periyar Sanctuary

Located in the districts of Idukki and Pathanamthitta Periyar is one the most famous sanctuary of South India

. Also known as Thekkady Wildlife Sanctuary, it is the best place to watch the animals in their natural environment.

Fauna: This place is a home to different species of animals and is a true delight for wildlife enthusiasts. While visiting this place one can spot barking deer, gaur, Sambhar, mongoose, mouse deer, foxes, leopards, Nilgiri Tahr, langur and bonnet macaque wandering without any fear. Besides these one can also enjoy watching monitor lizards, snakes, frogs, turtles, and fishes like salmon and trout.

Tiger Reserve: It is one of the 27 reserves made for the protection of tigers in India. It is situated in the area of Western Ghats in Idukki. Tourists can experience this wild world by taking jungle trek tours and if they are lucky they can also spot tiger in this park.

Plant Kingdom: This sanctuary is covered with evergreen tropical forests and also consists of a man made lake. One can see different types of trees in this area like Vateria indica, Cullenia exarillata, Hopea parviflora, Canarium strictrum and Artocapus hirsutus. There are total of 2000 kinds of flowering plants in this reservation. Also there are three kinds of seed plants and 170 different species of ferns.

Tourist Attractions: While visiting this place travelers can take a beautiful boat ride in the tranquil water of Periyar Lake. The serene and pristine grace of this reservation is simply mesmerizing. The whole atmosphere of this park is magical. They can also indulge in some adventurous activities like camping, trekking and river rafting.

One can also visit Sabrimala temple which is located very near to this Sanctuary.

Best time to visit: One can come to Periyar during the months of October to June.
