Wildlife Sanctuaries In East India: Thrilling Animals Waiting For You

obsession and travel to the eastern part of India which abounds with several animal sanctuaries. The richness of bio-diversity in this region makes it a popular choice for wildlife aficionados. These are sanctuaries are famous for being the real abode of Royal Bengal Tiger, the largest population of Single Horned Rhinoceros and underwater species. Listed below are the names of five animal sanctuaries situated in different parts of east India for your kind perusal.

Kaziranga National Park

An esteemed wildlife sanctuary in the northeastern part of India, Kaziranga National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site emblazoned in 1985. The park is spread over an area of 430 square kilometers and is partly located in the Golaghat and Nagaon District of Assam. The park is famous for brimming with the 2/3rd population of Single Horned Rhinoceros in Asia. The other animal species found in this sanctuary include bears, panthers, snakes, monitor lizard and several other avian species. There is no facility of jeep safari in Kaziranga and therefore either tourists have to arrange their own vehicle or hop on an elephant to explore the surrounding areas.

Sunderbans National Park


Spread over an area of 4264 square kilometers, Sunderbans National Park is a part of the worlds largest river formed by the river Ganges and Brahmaputra. The wildlife sanctuary is the original abode of the Royal Bengal Tigers and is covered with mangrove forests. It has also gained the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Currently there are 300 tigers residing in this park along with Chital deer, crocodile, rhesus monkey and Ridley sea turtle. The soothing climate and moisturizing environment support the growth of floral variety comprising of plant species, mangrove forests and tall grasses. December to February is the ideal time to visit this park.

Manas Tiger Reserve

The name of this wildlife sanctuary has originated from the Manas river named after the serpent goddess Manasa. The main stream of the Brahmaputra river flows through the heart of this park. Spread over an area of 360 square kilometers, Manas was declared as a tiger project in 1973. Before its declaration as the reserve, Manas National Park was the private hunting reserve of the royal family of Cooch Behar. Apart from the tiger, the park is also home to endangered species such as Asian Elephants, Assam Roofed Turtle, Hispid Hare, Golden Langur and the Pygmy Hog.

Hazaribagh National Park

Located in the state of Jharkhand, Hazaribagh National Park, positioned at an altitude of 615 meters, is spread over an area of 184 square kilometers. A wide variety of animals reside in this national park such as the chital, Nilgai, sambhar, panther, sloth bear and wild boar.There are several watch towers in this park that acts as a perfect hideout for sightseeing of animals in their natural turf. There are several worth visiting places around this sanctuary such as Canari Hill, Rajrappa falls and Suraj Kund.


Bhitarkanika National Park

Located on the tip of the Mahanadi River, Bhitarkanika Sanctuary is one of the few sanctuaries playing home to salt water crocodiles and turtles. The sanctuary is spread over an area of 650 square feet and got the recognition of a national park in 1975. It is a protected zone of estuarine crocodiles and plays host to a number of indigenous and migratory birds. Other animals residing here include King Cobra, Water Monitor Lizard and Indian Python.
