Will I Have A Fuel Surcharge On My Bill?
Everyone who has done business with courier companies long enough knows that it can
be a bit of a mystery at times when it comes to guessing what kinds of fees and surcharges are going to be on your bill every time you place an order. You can be charged for requesting service after hours, charged more again for holiday service, or have to pay a fee for an oversized, overweight, or delicate package. Another common fee is the fuel surcharge, so how do you know when a Phoenix courier is going to charge you a fuel surcharge.
The short answer is that you can never be 100% sure. However, there are some things that you can keep an eye on which can give you some clues. First though, you need to understand the nature of the fuel surcharge, and why couriers charge it in the first place.
A courier driver is in almost every case responsible for the cost of fuel which goes into his vehicle. That means that as the price of fuel goes up, so do their expenditures, which of course means that their profits go down. The courier companies get scared that this means that they will lose the services of their better drivers over time. In order to equalize the profits of their drivers, the couriers always add on a fuel surcharge when fuel prices go up by too much in a short period of time.
This means that the fuel surcharge goes directly to the driver. This is not something that is going into the pockets of the courier company to increase their own profits. It is a direct reflection of fuel prices, and not a cash grab by the couriers.
This gives you some insight into how you can see if a fuel surcharge may be coming your way on your next courier order. If there was no surcharge on your last shipment, but fuel prices have gone up considerably since then, it would be reason enough for the surcharge to be added to your next bill. You can usually predict a fuel surcharge with a certain degree of accuracy simply by watching the fluctuations of fuel prices at the pumps. A gradual increase may not bring surcharges as other expense are often part of that fluctuating economy, but a sudden spike in gas prices will frequently lead to the surcharge being levied.
