Win The Battle With Loneliness
For many, loneliness feels like a weight that one must bear in life
. We often feel a sense of powerlessness that can become paralyzing. The important thing to understand about loneliness is that it can be overcome with effort.
Battling Loneliness
Severe loneliness is a battle and one needs to fight to win and beat loneliness for better mental and physical health. The first step is not to feel sorry for your own self and wallow in self-pity. This is a recipe for sinking further into the well of loneliness. Feeling sorry for yourself tends to make one want to be further isolated, which simple compounds the problem.
Taking Action to Combat Loneliness
The easiest action to take in overcoming loneliness is to get out and interact with people, event tangentially. Go to a coffee shop or caf; go shopping or to the mall. Being around people is not a cure for loneliness, however interacting with people even in small ways is therapeutic.
When you do go out, have the intention of engaging with people. This doesn't have to be a full conversation, but acknowledging people with a nod or the simple act of ordering makes a connection. A way to make this easier is to give yourself little goals. For example, go to a caf and make a goal of giving someone who works there a complement. You'll be amazed at the positive interactions you can have.
Another great activity is to go to a museum or walk in the park or just around the neighborhood. Be attentive to your surroundings, keep your head up. When you interact with people be positive and most of all be nice! When you put out good vibes, good vibes return to you.
Musical Remedies for Loneliness
Listen
Music has a powerful effect on emotions. It can make us joyful and it can make us cry. Music can help us get over loneliness by uplifting our spirits and stimulate our brain. When you listen to the music, make a point of being thoughtful. Really listen to the lyrics and nuances of the arrangement and instruments. This is almost like meditation.
Experience
Another way music can help one deal with loneliness is by going to a concert. Most cities have live concerts every weekend and during the summer they are often outdoors. Many cafes and coffee shops will have evenings where they feature live music. These are the types of venues that are ideal for someone looking to combat loneliness. People are upbeat and happy. Check online for "live music" and start exploring. Here's a tip: sometimes one may feel anxious about asking someone to come along, fearing rejection and feeding into our thoughts of not being part of things. So, take a different approach. Go and experience some live music and then talk about your experience to people. You'll eventually get a "that sounds like fun" comment. Be prepared with an open ended invitation: "I think I'm going to go again this weekend..." Before you know it you'll find a companion.
Conquering loneliness is mostly about attitude and action. Forget self-pity and get out and enjoy things. Remember; just because one is alone, it doesn't mean you have to be lonely.
