Wind generator blades are the heart and soul of the residential wind turbine

While the other components of the equipment are important, the blades are the part that is the most central to power production.Much of the science behind many of the wind turbine technological improvements is focused on blade efficiency. The payoff for spending research and development dollars on the blade systems of these devices is very large.

These are the factors that will determine how efficient your wind generator blades are

Aerodynamics - The shape of the blades and their aerodynamic properties have a lot to do with the amount of power that you will be able extract from the wind you have. These aerodynamics are not straightforward though and they have little correlation with the aerodynamics of lift devices like aircraft wings. The aerodynamics of wind turbine blades is its own science with its own special set of criteria.

Weight/Materials - Increasingly, wind turbine blades are made out of composite materials. Practically speaking, composites mean the blades can be allowed to remain rigid but are much lighter.Keep in mind that designing wind generator blades is not a simple science. Manufacturers do not want to build wind turbine blades that just spin as fast as possible. (Although that seems like what you would logically want them to do!) In fact, it is a complex balancing act that the designers are required to do with these various factors that determine the success of the device over time.What I mean by that is that manufacturers have competing goals when designing wind generator blades. These are 2 main things they have to bring into line to perfect the design of the blades, or rotor system


Overspeed - To keep the blades from spinning out of control in very high winds or in gusts, manufacturers must govern the system by employing heavier construction materials and limiting the speed that the blade system can turn.

Power Creation - They also want to make the most power for you obviously, but if they concentrate just on that, the blades will be too light and will spin out of control in high winds.

In conclusion, wind generator blades matter more than any other individual part on the wind turbine because they turn the shaft inside the generator or motor and thereby, limit the amount of power you can make. The blades have to be carefully matched to the application you have with the wind you have. You just cannot generically approach blade design for your home wind turbine, instead it must be tailored to fit unique wind conditions.
