There were a lot of announcements in news and press of how many birds are killed in large wind turbines annually

. Some numbers do not seem substantial, but if to consider the total quantity, the problem is getting serious. Deeper study of these issues features the prospective extinction of the whole bird species and the distribution of birds only in out-of-wind-turbines places. That is the most pessimist possibility for now. However, the solution should be found immediately, as progress of technology leads to the decline of species diversity ad population. Probably, that was the main goal of Sigma Designs Company, which introduced the related invention recently.

The reason why flying birds are killed is in blades, mounted in turbines. That is why the company and its constructer, 89 years old Robert Green designed a wind turbine without blades and, therefore, a common wind power plants has transformed into Catching Wind Power device (CWP-device). According to the words of the patent-holder, birds cannot see blades moving with the speed over 128 km per hour, while flying. A new turbine has blades that are mounted for-scoop cone and the cone of internal compression, where they are inaccessible to birds. By the way, a new turbine works without any noise.

The cone shape of the turbine has many other advantages. One of them is catching a wind with a small speed nearly 2 meters per second, which is less that common horizontal speeds can do. A small diameter turbine, like a turbojet engine, can work at much higher wind speeds without fear of damage because the ends of the blades are much shorter than huge conventional wind turbine blades.

The main benefit of Sigma Design turbines is a cone. Cone, creating a high pressure upstream of the turbine can be very light (for larger diameters - even inflatable) - and firm at the same time. But it is not expensive, and the size of the turbine, obtaining wind energy, is drastically reduced: after all, it does not need to have a large area of operation. Meanwhile, it is a wind turbine, with its moving parts and high requirements for long-term durability, is the most expensive component of a common wind turbine - and often requires replacement.

Of course, this is the best way to avoid birds killing, but several attempts were made before Sigma Design. There are many wind turbines invented, which differ in blades activity. One may even find wind turbine with variable position blades patent, which can benefit both technology and environment.
