There is a common mis-perception about proper care required for a window air conditioning unit

. Many people believe that these smaller air conditioning systems do not need as much attention as larger central air conditioning systems. This is actually not the case. You need to look after your window AC unit just as you would your central air.

Changing/Cleaning Filters

Most homeowners know that their central air conditioning systems have filters that have to be cleaned or changed once every month, or sometimes every few months. What they don't realize is that window air conditioning units have filters that need cleaned or changed as well. If you neglect these filters, the air conditioning system will become dirty and the quality of air delivered to your home will suffer.

The life of your window AC unit will be cut down as well if the filter is not changed or cleaned on a timely basis. The problem is many people do not even realize that these smaller window units have filters. This is a big mistake you don't want to make in your own home.

Regular Inspections

Larger central air conditioning systems need inspections at least once a year, but most people never call a serviceman out for their window units. Why? Most people simply do not realize that these services are available for window AC units. For some reason, smaller air conditioners are not considered nearly as important as larger units. This is yet another mistake that you don't want to make in your home.

Call around to local air conditioning services and ask if they provide inspections for window units. You will find that the most reputable companies do have special prices for inspecting and cleaning smaller AC systems. Take advantage of these services and your window unit will last much longer in exchange for the attention.

Cleansing the System

Another common mistake made with window AC units is to neglect routine cleaning. This is something that you can actually do on your own to some extent. Take the time to clean out the vents and remove any dust or debris from the top of your unit. This includes dusting the inside of the unit and going outdoors to remove fallen leaves and other debris that may collect on top of the unit outside.

You may also want to protect the outside portion of your unit in some manner, but make sure not to restrict the airflow around the unit. This can affect the ability of the system to function properly and might negatively affect the air quality produced by the machine indoors. If you live in a very cold region with a lot of snow and ice, it may be best to remove the system from the window until it is needed again.

If you cannot possibly remove the unit from the window, consider a cover that can be removed when it is time to start using the machine again.

While many people neglect their window AC units, you do in fact need to service these units on a routine basis. If you keep the filter clean and remain diligent cleaning out the vents, you will have a better functioning machine that lasts for many years.
