Window Tinting In NYC & Long Island - The Current Laws and Controversy

The window tinting laws in NYC and Long Island have become much stricter over the last 5 years. Up until the 1990's, you were legally able to have any shade of window film on your vehicle. However, these days, residents are only allowed a small fraction of shade on their automobiles.

Although many people get their car windows tinted because of the looks, it can actually be very beneficial. Certain types of window film can block up to 99% of UV rays, protecting a persons body and the car's interior from the harsh NYC and Long Island sun. Window tint can also block up to 80% of Infrared light, which can be equally as damaging. These benefits have been a large part of NYC and Long Island residents' arguments as to why the current window tinting laws are too strict.

As of 2010, the laws in NYC and Long Island for window tint on cars is as follows:

Windshield - You are allowed non-reflective window film only on the top 6 inches.

Front & Backside Windows - Your tint must allow at least 71% of light in (29% dark or less)

Back Windshield - Any darkness is allowed

Although, these laws may seem reasonable to some, many New York residents feel that they are restrictive, pointless and just plain ridiculous. They argue that less than 30% darkness is virtually nothing, and the law should allow more than that. It is most disturbing to people who want tinted windows strictly for the looks. Less than 30% darkness in window film is easily seen through, and gives the car owner much less privacy than they would like.

However in the state's defense, these laws do not prevent anyone from protecting themselves of their car from the sun. Although far more expensive, there are many types of window tint that are perfectly clear, but still block UV rays and Infrared light.
