Windows 7 Migration - Application Compatibility

The scale of change introduced in Windows 7 includes a completely new kernel compared to XP

, a number of new security measures and rules that will result in over 70% applications being incompatible. Given this scenario, the application readiness strategy to address application incompatibilities is a critical pre-requisite for Windows 7 migration.

Most organizations have relied on running their core desktop and laptop builds on Windows XP for most part of the last decade in spite of the Vista launch, which witnessed limited success due to its performance issues. Today, things have changed with the launch of Microsoft Windows 7. The new operating system is a huge improvement over its predecessor in terms of stability, performance and security and with the formal end of life announcement for XP from Microsoft, migration to Windows 7 is inevitable.

The following list describes common compatibility issues for Windows 7, particularly when using an application originally designed for Windows XP:

User Account Control (UAC): In Windows 7, by default, all interactive users, including members of the administrators group, run as standard users. Because of UAC, applications that require administrator rights or check for administrator privileges behave differently in Windows 7, even when run by a user as administrator and hence may not run as desired.

Windows Resource Protection: Windows Resource Protection (WRP) is designed to protect the system in a read-only state to increase system stability, predictability, and reliability. This helps to protect features and applications that ship with the operating system from any impact of other applications and administrators. This impact can be an issue for custom installations not detected as set up by Windows 7 when applications try to replace WRP files and registry settings and check for specific versions and values.

Internet Explorer Protected Mode (IEPM): Windows Internet Explorer 8 in Windows 7, processes run in IEPM with greatly restricted privileges to help protect users from attack. IEPM significantly reduces the ability of an attack to write, alter, or destroy data on the user"s or to install malicious code. This could affect ActiveX controls and other script code that try to modify higher integrity-level objects.

New folder locations: User folders, My Documents folders, and folders with localization have changed since Windows XP Applications with hard-coded paths may not work.

Session 0 isolation: In earlier versions of the Windows operating system, services and applications run in the same session as the first user who logs on to the console (Session 0). In Windows 7, Session 0 has been isolated from other sessions. This could impact services or applications that communicate with applications using windows messages.

Approach for Handling Windows 7 Application Compatibility Issues

Organizations planning to migrate to Windows 7 are faced with many challenges while ensuring application compatibility with the new operating system. Application compatibility and remediation is the first step in preparing for migration Windows 7 and one huge challenge is 100% successful testing of the entire application portfolio. Making the right estimates on time, effort and investments required for assessing all applications for Windows 7 compatibility and making decisions on appropriate method to remediate and distribute applications to end users is extremely critical for overall program success. Hence, while planning for Windows 7 rollout, formulate and follow a comprehensive strategy to handle application compatibility issues is paramount.
